Lyme Disease, Gut Health & Rebuilding the Body: Why Healing Goes Beyond Symptoms

The Nourishment Studio Podcast: available here

What if healing isn't just about treating symptoms?

When we think about chronic illness, we're often taught to focus on the symptom that's causing the most discomfort.

The fatigue.

The brain fog.

The digestive issues.

The joint pain.

The hormonal imbalance.

But what if those symptoms are not the root problem?

What if they are signals telling us that the body needs support, nourishment, and restoration?

In the latest episode of Rooted & Rising, part of The Nourishment Studio Podcast, I share my personal journey with Lyme disease, recurrent bladder infections, years of antibiotics, hypothyroidism, gut health challenges, and the lessons I learned while navigating chronic illness.

Understanding Lyme Disease Beyond the Tick Bite

When people think about Lyme disease, they often imagine the classic bulls-eye rash or a memorable tick bite.

The reality is often far more complex.

Many individuals never notice a tick bite.

Others never develop the characteristic rash.

Instead, symptoms can appear gradually and evolve over time, making diagnosis challenging.

Common symptoms associated with Lyme disease may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Headaches

  • Digestive disturbances

  • Anxiety and mood changes

  • Sleep disruption

  • Nervous system dysregulation

For many people, the journey to understanding what is happening in their body can take months or even years.

My Experience with Chronic Illness

Before Lyme disease was ever on my radar, my health history already included a pattern of recurring symptoms.

I experienced:

  • Recurrent bladder infections

  • Multiple courses of antibiotics

  • Digestive issues

  • Gut health challenges

  • Hypothyroidism

  • Persistent fatigue

Over time, these experiences taught me something incredibly important:

The body rarely operates in isolated systems.

The immune system affects the gut.

The gut influences the brain.

Stress impacts hormones.

Nutritional deficiencies affect energy production.

Everything is connected.

Why Gut Health Matters After Antibiotics

One recurring theme in my personal health journey has been the relationship between antibiotics and gut health.

While antibiotics can be life-changing and lifesaving when used appropriately, repeated courses may also influence the balance of the gut microbiome.

This is one reason why supporting gut health became an important part of my recovery journey.

Some of the foundations I focused on included:

  • Eating nutrient-dense whole foods

  • Prioritising protein intake

  • Increasing fibre-rich foods

  • Supporting digestive health

  • Reducing chronic stress

  • Improving sleep quality

Healing the gut is not about perfection.

It is about creating an environment where the body has the resources it needs to repair and recover.

Why Restrictive Diets Are Not Always The Answer

One of the most valuable lessons I learned while navigating chronic illness was understanding the difference between elimination and nourishment.

When the body is depleted, overly restrictive diets can sometimes create additional stress.

Instead of constantly asking:

"What should I remove?"

I began asking:

"What should I add?"

This shift helped me focus on:

  • Protein-rich foods

  • Healthy fats

  • Colourful fruits and vegetables

  • Minerals and micronutrients

  • Blood sugar balance

  • Consistent nourishment

For me, healing became less about restriction and more about rebuilding.

The Role of Magnesium, Vitamin D & Nutritional Status

No supplement is a magic solution.

But nutritional status matters.

When the body has been dealing with chronic illness, inflammation, stress, recurrent infections, or nutrient depletion, foundational nutrients can become increasingly important.

This is why I started paying closer attention to:

  • Vitamin D

  • Magnesium

  • Protein intake

  • Mineral balance

  • Overall nutrient density

Rather than searching for a miracle cure, I became more interested in ensuring my body had the building blocks it needed to function optimally.

Nervous System Regulation & Chronic Illness

One of the most profound discoveries on my journey was understanding the role of the nervous system.

When the body perceives ongoing stress, whether physical or emotional, it can become difficult to access the rest, recovery, and repair processes that support healing.

This is why nervous system regulation became such an important part of my wellbeing toolkit.

Practices that supported me included:

  • Breathwork

  • Somatic practices

  • Time in nature

  • Gentle movement

  • Mindfulness

  • Rest and recovery

Healing is not only physiological.

It is emotional, mental, and nervous-system based too.

Reconnecting With Nature

Nature became one of my greatest teachers.

Walking outdoors, spending time in green spaces, slowing down, and reconnecting with the natural world helped me rediscover something many of us lose during illness:

Trust.

Trust in our bodies.

Trust in the healing process.

Trust that recovery does not always happen overnight.

There Is No Magic Supplement

One of the biggest misconceptions in health and wellness is the belief that one supplement, one protocol, or one diet will solve everything.

My experience taught me something different.

Healing often happens through the accumulation of many small actions:

  • Better nutrition

  • Rest

  • Stress management

  • Nervous system support

  • Gut health

  • Meaningful relationships

  • Time outdoors

  • Consistency

The foundations matter.

The Most Important Lesson Lyme Disease Taught Me

Perhaps the biggest lesson of all was this:

Your body is not your enemy.

Even when symptoms feel frustrating, confusing, or overwhelming, the body is constantly communicating.

Symptoms are often signals.

Not punishments.

Not failures.

Not something to fight against.

The question becomes:

What is the body asking for?

Sometimes healing begins when we stop asking:

"What do I need to get rid of?"

And start asking:

"What does my body need me to rebuild?"
